1575: First TOurnament
The first informal international chess tournament took place when Leonardo da Cutri and Paolo Boi of Italy traveled to the court of Philip II in Madrid to play against Ruy Lopez and Alfonso Ceron of Spain. Ruy Lopez (depicted in this painting on the far left) had already beaten both of them in several previous games. The champion would be first to 3 victories and it seemed like an easy win for the Spanish after 2 straight wins. Nevertheless, the Italians won the next 3 in a row, and with it the tournament. Ruy Lopez died 5 years later.
